Axolotls are native to the lakes and wetlands south of Mexico City, particularly Lake Xochimilco and Lake Chalco. However, both lakes have been drained to reduce flooding. Lake Chalco is practically disappearing. Axolotls are now confined to the canals of these lakes, and possibly a third lake, Chapultepec. There is also a large captive population of axolotls. They are frequently found in zoos and laboratories and are kept as pets.
